Setting the Record Straight for Mayor de Blasio re:
- A mythical DNA lab in the basement of the 9/11 museum - Phantom communications with 9/11 family members - And the repository in the 9/11 museum, which is claimed not to be in the museum at all !
On the eve of a planned move of the unidentified human remains into the basement of the private, $24 per person- “pay to grieve” 9/11 museum, Mayor de Blasio and his staff continue a legacy of misinformation and lies over the $1.2 billion tourist attraction at Ground Zero. Mayor de Blasio’s administration has made many claims over the last several days, many of which are misleading and plain false. They include:
FICTION: “The city maintains the remains need to be placed at the museum because a medical examiner's office will be installed in the basement to continue identification efforts. The office will be fully staffed and operational with DNA testing equipment” (Newsday, 5/8/14)
FACT: The city and the 9/11 memorial museum foundation have for years, attempted to confuse the public, the media, and 9/11 families about “laboratory work” at the repository. When a similar instance of passing on such misinformation arose in 2013, the city medical examiner’s office was forced to admit to The Record: “This column by Mike Kelly on Saturday incorrectly described an area of the 9/11 Museum in downtown New York. According to a spokesman, the president of the museum misspoke when he referred to the area as a "lab" to be operated by the New York City Office of the Medical Examiner. The Office of the Medical Examiner said Saturday the area would be a repository for the remains and that no DNA testing would take place there.“ (The Record, 9/8/13)
FICTION: The city "has engaged the community of 9/11 families continuously since entering office four months ago. This includes talking with and listening to families who have questions about this plan -- as well as many families who are supportive and comfortable with this plan." (Newsday, 5/8/14)
FACT: Family group leaders of “9/11 Parents & Families of Firefighters and WTC Victims” opposed to the unethical plan to place the human remains in the 9/11 museum have repeatedly asked for a meeting with Mayor de Blasio and have been ignored. There has been virtually no interaction with the de Blasio administration.
FICTION: The human remains repository is not part of the museum.
FACT: The human remains repository is most certainly a part of the 9/11 museum, termed a “programmatic element” of the museum by the museum’s own staff! The only way to get to the repository for family members is through the museum. The wall in front of the repository - with its historically inappropriate Virgil quote “No day shall erase you from the memory of time” – will point visitors to the location of the repository. So much for “it’s not part of the museum.”
