9/11 Firefighter Families Call on Governor Andrew Cuomo & Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance to Provide Oversight & to Open an Immediate Criminal Investigation of the NYC Office of the Chief Medical Examiner
Call for Removal of Incompetent Management and Installation of Independent Monitor at OCME
9/11 Families were shocked to learn of the latest OCME outrage as reported by the New York Post 7/21/13. Apparently an Assistant to the Chief Medical Examiner was more focused on recovering souvenirs than on recovering the thousands of human remains of heroes and victims of 9/11. No wonder 1,100 innocent victims still remain missing to this day. Despite the fact that our loved ones were literally swept up with the trash by street sweepers - nevertheless this OCME executive was gleefully collecting mementos for her coffee table.
The litany of corruption and mismanagement recently described in the New York Post is no surprise to 9/11 Parents and Families of Firefighters and World Trade Center Victims. We have been desperately seeking leadership to gain control and oversight over the NYC Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for nearly a decade. Our longstanding demands to completely overhaul the OCME have fallen on deaf ears.
Despite appeals from 9/11 Parents and Families of Firefighters and World Trade Center Victims, the NYC Mayor, City Council, and Department of Investigations as well as the State of New York have collectively failed to lift a finger to effectively deal with the gross incompetence and criminal activity that has taken place within the OCME within the last several years.
We call on the Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance to initiate a criminal investigation into the accusations leveled in the NY Post report and the long and dirty laundry list of OCME misdeeds over the last decade. In addition, we call on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to install a special master to oversee daily operations of the OCME and to direct a complete overhaul of OCME management.
We have no confidence in the current leadership of the OCME. The bottom line is: the public relies on the OCME to provide reliable, scientifically-based causes of death for those who die in NYC . The public also relies on this office for the scientifically accurate identification and handling of precious DNA samples - to identify the lost, help prosecute the guilty and exonerate the innocent. The OCME has repeatedly failed in this sacred duty as well. The OCME represents a betrayal of trust - not only for the 9/11 families - but for the general public as well.
The retrieval of human remains in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 was a disaster unto itself as a result of the ineptitude and unprofessional behavior of the OCME. Twelve years later the disaster continues as the OCME hatches a disrespectful and catastrophic plan to place 9,000 human remains 70 ft below ground in a flood zone "A" location - the 9/11 museum! ! Why should the City of NY , the public, or any 9/11 family accept such an outrageous plan from an agency that has such a mired and unprofessional history ?
