Statement from the FealGood Foundation regarding NY Times Article "The Foreclosure Fiasco" by Joe Nocera, who compares the Foreclosure Fiasco to the 9/11 Health & Compensation Bill.

In reference to Joe Noceras article The Foreclosure Fiasco printed in the New York Times on January 15, 2013, Mr. Nocera should be admonished for comparing the Foreclosure Fiasco to the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund (VCF) payments to 9/11 First Responders. Regardless of ones feelings about the overall theme of Mr. Noceras article or the foreclosure bailout in general, the authors comparison is simply off the mark and ill thought out. First, it must be pointed out, following the attacks of September 11th, Christine Todd Whitman, then head of the federal Environmental Protection Agency, directly lied to the men and women who were serving our country at Ground Zero. Her deliberate words, made on behalf of the federal government, helped place thousands of men and women in harms way. In recognition of this fault, at least in part, the benefit of the doubt should be rightfully given to First Responders even if there was no direct evidentiary link as Mr. Nocera claims. But of course, Mr. Noceras statement on evidence is also inaccurate.

If Mr. Nocera had bothered to research his statement prior to its utterance he would have found that at least one study has found increased rates of cancer among studied First Responders. Additionally, the report to which Mr. Nocera directly alludes also found increased rates of specific forms of cancer to the toxins encountered at the World Trade Center Site. Mr. Nocera couldn't even bother to get the funding amount of the VCF correct. The research was shoddy at best, negligent at worst. But, why let facts get in the way of a good argument.

Most importantly, and another seemingly insignificant fact to Mr. Nocera, unlike some who had their homes foreclosed on by the banks, under no scenario are First Responders to blame for their illnesses. 9/11 First Responders rushed into burning buildings, saved countless lives and spent the next year digging through a burning pile of rubble trying to bring some closure to the nearly three thousand families that lost a loved one. Of course federal funds should be paid to those who rightfully deserve compensation, on this point I agree with Mr. Nocera. However, to look these brave men and women in the eye, men and women who were at peek physical fitness on 9/11, and tell them unequivocally that their cancer is not 9/11 related is impossible. So, we err on the side of the developing medical evidence that shows a connection and we compensate these amazing heroes as rightly deserving. Of course, if Mr. Nocera sees fault in this, the next time there is an emergency situation, hes welcome to come on down and save some lives, spend months in a rescue, recovery and clean-up effort without regard to his own personal safety and health and roll the dice on his long term physical and mental fitness. Or, he could simply stay at his cushy writing position but pay a bit more attention to the facts next time he wants to draw comparisons.
