The Charities Bureau of the Office of NYS Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman is pleased to announce the following:

E-File Your IRS 990 and CHAR500 at the Same Time

Charities registered with the Attorney General's Charities Bureau may now electronically file their annual filings - CHAR500 and IRS Form 990 - with the Charities Bureau at the same time that they file IRS Form 990 with the IRS. Until now, charities had to submit paper filings of the CHAR500 in New York even though they could file Form 990 electronically with the IRS. By using Form990.org , a service provided by the Urban Institute's National Center for Charitable Statistics , charities can now file electronically with both agencies, significantly reducing processing time.

E-Filing implements a recommendation of the Attorney General's Leadership Committee for Nonprofit Revitalization, which earlier this year made a series of recommendations to lessen burdens on nonprofits, including allowing nonprofits to file electronically with the Charities Bureau.

Visit www.charitiesnys.com for more instructions on how to E-File.

Charity Corps' Volunteer Attorney Program Expanded

Charity Corps is launching its second year of matching volunteer attorneys with nonprofits that need legal counsel on matters involving corporate law, governance and compliance matters. The program, a joint initiative between the Attorney General's Office and the New York State Bar Association, expects to serve up to 100 additional eligible nonprofit organizations in 2013, building upon a successful pilot year.

Nonprofit organizations seeking assistance from Charity Corps must apply by January 15, 2013. To be eligible, an organization must have 501(c)(3) tax status and demonstrate that it cannot afford counsel. Nonprofits and volunteer attorneys can get application forms and additional information about Charity Corps by visiting the Charity Corps webpage . Visit www.charitiesnys.com for additional information and guidance for nonprofits.
