Apply for a Capacity Fund Grant! Deadline
Partnerships for Parks’ Capacity Fund makes grants to community groups working in NYC parks to strengthen their outreach, membership, and program-planning capacity.
Grants range from $250 to $5,000.
What can you do with a Capacity Fund grant?
Here are a few examples:
Friends of Wingate Park in Brooklyn was awarded $800 for outreach materials to recruit volunteers and boost group development and identity.
Friends of the Woods in the Bronx was awarded $2,500 for outreach materials and printed program materials for a new health initiative in University Woods Park, with workshops, screenings, and educational material, to address health issues and show how parks can help people improve their health, and to gain support through membership recruitment and increased attendance at events.
Macdonough 35 Block Association in Brooklyn was awarded $1,650 for tree guard materials, tree signs, a bulletin board, and a folding table to engage passers-by, dog walkers, park families, and local residents; increase the membership of block association; and develop partnerships while helping create a sense of ownership.
We strongly recommend prospective applicants to attend one of the following grant workshops to learn more about what projects are eligible:

Mary Kay Foundation Invites Applications for Nature Explore Classrooms to Help Domestic Violence Survivors Heal

The Mary Kay Foundation and Mary Kay, Inc. have partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation and Dimensions Educational Research Foundation to bring Nature Explore Classrooms to domestic violence shelters.
Nature Explore Classrooms are outdoor learning spaces designed to include nature in the daily lives and learning of children. Research shows that nature can help soften the impact of life stress on children and help them deal with adversity.
By the end of 2012, Mary Kay will have sponsored seventeen Nature Explore Classrooms to help child survivors of domestic violence heal from abuse — representing a combined donation and support of nearly $800,000 since the program's inception in 2009.
Mary Kay is accepting applications to build four new Nature Explore Classrooms at women's shelters in the United States. Shelters that serve survivors of domestic violence and have outdoor space available to accommodate learning stations and equipment are eligible to apply.
Along with the outdoor area, each classroom includes a multi-faceted curriculum to fully maximize the educational opportunities and healing effects of the outdoor environment. The classroom is funded entirely by Mary Kay and is an investment totaling more than $50,000.

Walmart Foundation Accepting Applications for State Giving Program

Through the State Giving Program, the Walmart Foundation supports organizations with programs that align with the foundation's mission to create opportunities for people to live better.
The State Giving Program awards grants starting at $25,000 to nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations that serve a particular state or region. State Advisory Councils made up of local Walmart associates represent each state, including Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. The State Advisory Councils determine needs within each state, review all eligible grant applications, and make funding recommendations to the foundation.
The foundation has adopted four areas of focus: Education — addressing the educational needs of underserved young people between the ages of 12 and 25; Workforce — development/economic opportunity, providing job readiness and skills training as well as support services for workers with low to moderate skills; Environmental sustainability — promoting production systems that sustain people and the environment by reducing waste and promoting energy efficiency and the use of renewable resources; and Health and wellness — improving access to healthcare, reducing healthcare disparities, and promoting nutrition. Programs that do not align with the four areas of focus will not be considered.
Walmart and the Walmart Foundation made a $2 billion commitment through 2015 to hunger relief efforts in the United States in order to support the record one in six Americans who do not know where their next meal is coming from. As hunger relief is now an integral part of the foundation's work, the foundation seeks to fund initiatives that integrate hunger relief into the four main focus areas. Additional areas of focus are women's economic empowerment and veterans.
Only organizations with current tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code are eligible to request funding. (Organizations must be listed in the most current IRS 50 State Master File at the time the grant request is submitted.)
The State Giving Program is accepting applications through August 10, 2012. (Please note: Organizations in northwest Arkansas should apply to the Northwest Arkansas Giving Program, which accepts applications year round.)

Home Depot Foundation Accepting Applications for 2012 Community Impact Grants Program

The Home Depot Foundation, a philanthropic vehicle of Home Depot, has announced that it is accepting applications for its Community Impact Grants Program from nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations, public schools, and public service agencies in the United States that are using the power of volunteers to improve the physical health of their communities.
Given the realities of the current housing market, the foundation is prioritizing projects that help military veterans stay in their homes comfortably. More competitive grant proposals will specifically identify projects for veterans and will include housing repairs, modifications, and weatherization work.
Proposals for the following community improvement activities will be considered: repairs, refurbishments, and modifications to low-income and/or transitional veteran's housing, or community facilities (schools, community centers, senior centers, etc.); weatherizing or increasing energy efficiency of low-income and/or transitional veterans' housing, or community facilities; and planting trees or community gardens and/or landscaping community facilities that serve veterans. Grants must support work completed by community volunteers in the U.S.
Only registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, tax-exempt public schools, and tax-exempt public agencies in the U.S. are eligible to apply.
Grants of up to $5,000 will be made in the form of Home Depot gift cards for the purchase of tools, materials, or services.

Applications Invited for National Wildlife Refuge Friends Group Grant Program
In recognition of the important role refuge friends organizations play in building critical community support for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service's National Wildlife Refuge System, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, along with its partners, is requesting grant proposals for projects that help these organizations be effective co-stewards of important natural resources within the National Wildlife Refuge System.
The Friends Group grant program provides competitive seed grants for creative and innovative proposals that aim to increase the number and effectiveness of organizations interested in assisting the refuge system nationwide. The primary purpose of the program is to provide assistance to new and existing friends organizations. For the fall 2012 grant cycle, friends organizations are invited to submit proposals that focus on start-up and capacity-building projects.
Grants will be provided to support proposals that fall within the following areas:
1) Start-up grants — Funds will be provided to assist starting refuge friends organizations with formative and/or initial operational support. For example, funds may be requested for such things as membership drives, tuition for nonprofit training programs, brochure and newsletter development, logo design, office equipment, or consultant fees for planning a mission and strategic plan.
2) Capacity-building grants — Funds will be provided to strengthen the capacity of existing refuge friends organizations. Capacity building refers to projects that enhance an organization's abilities while allowing them to achieve measurable and sustainable results. For example, projects may include outreach programs aimed at increasing organizational capacity to serve the public; business plan development or other strategic planning costs; membership program development; board/ leadership development such as trainings; development of exhibits to expand community outreach efforts; tuition for skill-building training programs; and nature or book store start-up expenses.
Eligible applicants are official refuge friends organizations. Applicants must either be tax-exempt under section 501(c), or be in the process of applying for 501(c)(3) status and submit with their grant application a copy of the letter from the IRS confirming their application has been filed.
Grants will range from $1,500 to $5,000.

GenerationOn Offers Mini-Grants for Youth Community Action Heroes

GenerationOn, the youth division of the Points of Light Institute, and Hasbro, Inc., are inviting young people to use their summer to take action and make their mark through the summer 2012 "The World Needs More Community Action Heroes" community service campaign.
Bringing together the nation's leading youth service organizations and programs under one umbrella, generationOn is a global youth service movement that works to inspire, equip, and mobilize youth to take action that changes the world, and themselves, through service. To become a Community Action Hero, young people 13 years of age and older can log on to the generationOn Web site and select a project in the issue area they care about (e.g., animals, literacy, health, emergency preparedness, environment, homelessness, hunger, the military), or an issue of their choice. Kids who then share their stories of community service on the Web site will become eligible for one of ten mini-grants of $500 to continue their projects.
The mini-grant program is open to all youth 13 years of age and over who are legal residents of the United States; youth under the age of 13 are able to participate in the campaign with their families.

Cities of Service Announces Impact Volunteering Fund

Cities of Service, a bipartisan coalition of United States mayors committed to injecting the leadership of local elected executives into the service movement, has launched the Impact Volunteering Fund to help more cities use "impact volunteering" to tackle pressing local challenges. The $2 million initiative is funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies.
The Cities of Service model focuses on "impact volunteering" — volunteer strategies that target community needs, use best practices, and set clear outcomes and measures to gauge progress and heighten the focus on impact and outcomes. The model seeks to equip mayors with the tools to engage citizens as resources and assets in addressing both existing and emerging priorities, rather than solely as service users and clients.
Any mayor whose city is a member of the Cities of Service coalition is eligible to apply on behalf of the city and its partners. Initiatives can address any issues in the Cities of Service priority areas, which include education and youth, health, neighborhood revitalization, preparedness and safety, sustainability, and veterans.
Cities will be selected based on a number of criteria, including the quality of the initiative plan, the quality of the implementation plan, impact potential, how resources are leveraged, demonstrated partnerships, and the commitment of executive leadership.
The fund will make grants ranging from $25,000 to $100,000, with larger amounts reserved for cities with multiple initiatives.
The first round of grants will be awarded in October 2012; a second round will be made a year later.
Intent to Apply letters for the first round of grants received before July 9, 2012, will receive preference.

New York City Venture Philanthropy Offers Support for Innovative Arts Organization

The New York City Venture Philanthropy Fund, a giving circle of individuals who combine their professional skills and financial contributions to support local social entrepreneurs focused on tackling persistent social and economic problems, annually provides funding and capacity-building services to an innovative start-up nonprofit that is working to address a major social problem.
VPF seeks to provide an effective method for identifying emerging, underfunded, and underrecognized projects or programs that embody an entrepreneurial spirit and promise high impact and effectiveness in tackling a complex, persistent social problem. VPF is especially interested in supporting start-ups and fledgling organizations that have not yet received significant support from major funders.
In order to focus on issues in a meaningful way, each year VPF makes a grant in one critical area, such as education, the arts, hunger, or poverty. In 2012, VPF members voted to support unique, innovative ideas that address the arts in New York City.
Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations with annual operating budgets of $500,000 or less working in New York City on issues related to the arts are eligible to apply. The strongest applicants will introduce a highly innovative, well-planned, and scalable model for tackling issues related to the arts; have the potential to demonstrate measurable results; boast a professional leadership team with the appropriate experience and expertise to enable the organization and its programs to succeed; and have a board with a strong contribution record.
The selected organization will receive a one-year cash grant of $6,000 as well as technical assistance from VPF members and partners and access to professional networks, including consulting services, donors and funding, and expanded constituencies.

Build-A-Bear Workshop Accepting Grant Requests for Children's Health, Animals, and Literacy Programs

Toy retailer Build-A-Bear Workshop provides grants through the Build-A-Bear Workshop Foundation and the Build-A-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation to charities in the United States and Canada working to support a range of causes, including children's health and wellness, animals, and literacy and education.
This year, the Build-A-Bear Workshop foundations will be accepting and reviewing grant applications on a rolling basis until August 31 for the following funding categories:
Children's Health and Wellness — Grants for nonprofit organizations such as childhood disease research foundations, child safety organizations, and organizations that serve children with special needs.
Domestic Pets — Grants to support animal welfare groups, pet rescue and rehabilitation efforts, therapy animals, and humane education. Literacy and Education — Grants to support children's literacy and education, including summer reading programs, early childhood education programs, and literacy programs for children with special needs.
The foundations also will consider miscellaneous grant requests from organizations working to support children, families, animals, and the environment through programs that are not easily categorized.
U.S. applicants must be tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organizations. Canadian applicants must be registered Canadian charities. Priority will be given to organizations located near Build-A-Bear Workshop stores.
Grants are made as one-time contributions and will range from $1,000 to $5,000, with an average grant amount of $1,500.

Grassroots Action and Movement Leadership Grants.

The North Star Fund’s Grassroots Action Grants supports new, emerging and small groups engaged in community organizing and base building to build leadership and grassroots activism in NYC's marginalized communities. Grants are $5,000 or $10,000. Their Movement Leadership Grants provide a deeper investment of support in effective organizations that have already shown a strong record of success in their community organizing works. Grants are $25,000 per year for 2 years.

Greening Western Queens Fund Grant
In the fall of 2009, North Star Fund launched the "Greening Western Queens Fund," a new $7.9 million initiative to invest in energy-efficiency and environmental projects in the Western Queens community affected by a July 2006 electric power outage. This program is supported by funds from the community's settlement with Con Edison. North Star Fund is currently accepting applications for Year 3 of the Greening Western Queens Fund.


September 29, 2012: National Public Lands Day

National Public Lands Day (NPLD) is the nation’s largest single-day volunteer event for public lands. Volunteers from across the United States and its territories come together to perform service projects on public lands, including tree plantings, invasive plant removal, historic site restoration and trash pick-ups. In 2011, more than 170,000 volunteers lent a hand at 2,067 sites in every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

There are many reasons for a public land to consider hosting an NPLD event. With its status as the nation’s largest one-day volunteer event for public lands, NPLD receives considerable attention and press at the local and national level. Its prominence serves as a catalyst to attract new volunteers and visitors to your public land. Once a person is introduced to your park as a volunteer, they will want to return again and again.

Nutro Company Announces Grant Program for Community Dog Parks

The Nutro Company, a manufacturer of pet food products, is inviting applications for the third annual Room to Run Dog Park Appreciation Project, a grant program designed to support dog parks and off-leash areas serving communities in the United States.
The program will award thirty grants of $2,000 on a rolling basis (through October 2012) to help fund enhancement efforts in public, nonprofit dog parks. Examples of funded enhancements include general repairs and maintenance (e.g., painting benches, repairing fences), installation of new agility equipment, landscaping, updates to water system, and creation of a poop bag center.

North Face Explore Fund Accepting Proposals for Programs to Connect Children With Nature

The North Face Explore Fund was created by the North Face outdoor equipment and apparel company to inspire and enable the next generation of explorers and conservationists by funding nonprofit community organizations that are working to re-connect children with nature.
The fund will support organizations that encourage youth outdoor participation by creating more connections between children and nature, increasing access to both front and backcountry recreation, and providing education for both personal and environmental health.

Applicant organizations must have nonprofit 501(c)(3) status or be seeking this designation. Proposed programs should encourage community involvement, focus on breaking down barriers to getting youth outdoors, seek a specific audience, and reach out to a specific community or place of interest. Programs should have a good chance of significant measureable results and momentum over a fairly short term (one to three years).

The fund does not support organizations without 501(c)(3) status, general education efforts that do not include an experiential component that involves getting youth outdoors, research, conferences, endowment funds, or political campaigns.

Grants will provide up to $2,500. Funds may not be used for indirect costs, overhead, or other expenses not directly related to the project or program. Applications that come with matching dollars will be viewed favorably. Organizations may apply for more than one grant as long as the funds will be used for unique programs.

Lowe's Toolbox for Education Accepting Applications for Fall 2012 K-12 Public School Improvement Projects

Funded by the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation, the Lowe's Toolbox for Education programprovides grant awards of up to $5,000 to support school improvement projects at K-12 public schools in the United States. Now in its sixth year, the program has donated over $25 million to more than five thousand schools.
For the 2012-13 school year program, the foundation will give priority to basic necessities. There is a preference for funding requests that have a permanent impact such as facility enhancement (both indoor and outdoor), as well as landscaping/cleanup projects. Projects that encourage parent involvement and build stronger community spirit are encouraged. (Please note: the grant money cannot be used to pay for memorials, stipends, salaries, artists in residence, field trips, scholarships, or third-party funding.)
Sample project ideas include reading gardens, vegetable gardens, physical fitness areas, school landscaping projects, school nature trails, parent involvement centers, peer tutoring centers, playgrounds, and rotating student art exhibits.
Any individual U.S. public K-12 school or nonprofit parent group associated with a public K-12 school is eligible to apply. Parent groups that are applying (PTO, PTA, etc.) must have an independent EIN and official 501(c)(3) status from the IRS. Groups without 501(c)(3) status should apply through their school. Preschools are not eligible.
Grant requests must be between $2,000 and $5,000 per school. Lowe's will donate $5 million to schools and school parent/teacher groups at more than one thousand different schools during the school year.
The deadline for submitting applications for the fall 2012 grant cycle is October 12, 2012. However, if fifteen hundred or more applications are received before the deadline, then the application process will close.

UnitedHealth HEROES Service-Learning Grants
UnitedHealthcare invites schools and other community-based nonprofit organizations to step into service by applying for UnitedHealth HEROES grants. Grants of up to $1,000 are available for youth-led service-learning projects which aim to combat childhood obesity through walking, running or hiking programs.

Responsible Sports Program Opens Fall 2012 Community Grants Program

Responsible Sports, a philanthropic program of insurance company Liberty Mutual, is accepting applications from youth sports organizations in the United States to participate in its Responsible Sports Community Grant program.
To be eligible for the program, league administrators must first register their youth sports organization at the Responsible Sports Web site. Once they do, coaches, parents, administrators, and youth sports supporters can participate in the Responsible Sports Parenting and/or Responsible Coaching coursework. Participants who then pass the ten-question Responsible Sport Parenting quiz or Responsible Coaching quiz can credit the successfully passed quiz to their favorite youth sports league. Fifteen youth sport organizations with the most credited certifications will earn a Responsible Sports Community Grant to help defray the costs of running their youth sports program.
To be eligible for a grant, organizations must be a registered nonprofit traditional youth sport organization or school athletic program recognized by the governing bodies of their sport(s) and operating in one of the fifty states of the United States or the District of Columbia. Eligible organizations include nonprofit youth sports teams or organizations, recreational departments, and high school athletic teams. Organizations must serve the community at large and must be open to the general public.
Adult sports organizations serving participants 18 years of age and older and for-profit programs are not eligible.
For the fall 2012 program, organizations will compete for grants in three categories. Large organizations of a hundred or more players will compete for one of five grants of $2,500; small organizations of under a hundred players will compete for one of five grants of $2,500; and school/educational organizations (including school athletic programs) will compete for one of five grants of $2,500.

Baseball Tomorrow Fund Offers Support for Youth Baseball and Softball Programs

The Baseball Tomorrow Fund is a joint initiative between Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association designed to promote and enhance the growth of youth participation in baseball and softball around the world by funding programs, fields, coaches' training, uniforms, and equipment.
Grants are intended to finance a new program, expand or improve an existing program, undertake a new collaborative effort, or obtain facilities or equipment necessary for youth baseball or softball programs.
The Baseball Tomorrow Fund supports projects that meet the following evaluation criteria: increase the number of youth participating in baseball and softball programs; improve the quality of youth baseball and softball programs; create new or innovative ways of expanding and improving baseball or softball programs; are able to match funds for programs; provide programs for children aged 10-16; support existing programs that have demonstrated success in providing a quality youth baseball/softball experience; and address opportunities for minorities and women.
Nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations involved in youth baseball programs are encouraged to apply for Baseball Tomorrow Fund grants.
Applicants are invited to submit a Letter of Inquiry. Letters of inquiry are accepted throughout the year. Selected applicants are invited to submit a full application. Grants are awarded on a quarterly basis.

Youth Service America Invites Applications for J-Serve Grants to Support Projects on International Day of Jewish Youth Service

A limited number of micro-grants of up to $500 each will be awarded for community projects committed to creating service opportunities that bring Jewish teens together to participate in a J-Serve project. Projects that are creative and innovative, especially those that are first-time events in a community, as well as projects conceived and planned by teen project leaders (with adequate adult supervision), will receive preferential reviews. Micro-grant applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, and grants will continue to be awarded as long as funding remains available.

Powered by Service Offers Funding to Seed Youth-Led Service Projects

Usher's New Look, a nonprofit organization founded by entertainer Usher Raymond IV that supports underprivileged youth in using their talents to become community leaders, has announced the launch of Powered By Service, a new initiative to encourage young people around the world to become involved in addressing the most pressing problems facing their communities — from preventing malaria and stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS to ending gang violence and increasing access to clean water.
Young people all over the world can participate in Powered By Service. Participants will have access to online toolkits and opportunities to apply for financial resources to support their projects. Grants will be awarded for exceptional service ideas.
Powered By Service currently has two grant opportunities available for youth volunteers.
Sponsored by the United Nations Foundation, the "Nothing but Nets" grant is designed to help youth create projects that increase awareness and funds for the purchase of bed nets to prevent the spread of malaria in Africa.
Sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service's Learn and Serve America, the "What's Your Power?" grant opportunity offers funding for projects that address any issue. Youth are invited to design a project around the cause that interests them.

Garden Apprentice Program in Brooklyn

The Garden Apprentice Program (GAP) at Brooklyn Botanic Garden is a great way for teens to learn about urban agriculture and the environment while working in one of the most exciting public gardens in the world! Apprentices can work their way up the four-tier program, potentially earning a paid position as Senior Apprentice. The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation -- Fruit Tree Orchard Grant Overview

The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation (FTPF) is an award-winning international nonprofit charity dedicated to planting fruitful trees and plants to alleviate world hunger, combat global warming, strengthen communities, and improve the surrounding air, soil, and water. FTPF programs strategically donate orchards where the harvest will best serve communities for generations, at places such as community gardens, public schools, city/state parks, low-income neighborhoods, Native American reservations, international hunger relief sites, and animal sanctuaries. FTPF’s unique mission, which has been featured in The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times and The Today Show, benefits the environment, human health, and animal welfare—all at once! Our orchard donations are available for recipients who pledge to care for the trees and utilize them for a charitable purpose. If selected for an orchard donation, FTPF will provide high-quality fruit trees and shrubs, organic soil amendments, equipment, planting volunteers, and on-site orchard design work, horticultural workshops, and aftercare training—with the goal of improving the surrounding environment and providing a source of healthy nutrition for the community. We also help coordinate all aspects of the planting, and offer an educational experience for volunteers interested in learning more about tree planting. Free community arboricultural workshops are also available the day of the planting.

Recipients must be nonprofits, public schools, or government entities that 1) own the planting site (or have long-term arrangements to remain at the planting site), 2) are committed to caring for the trees in perpetuity, 3) have a source of irrigation nearby, 4) and can help coordinate local volunteers to join us on the day of planting.


Google Grants Program

Google Grants is a part of the Google for Nonprofits program. Google for Nonprofits is Google's product offering for the nonprofit sector. As a qualified Google for Nonprofits organization, you will gain access to a variety of different product offerings such as Google Grants.
The Google Grants program empowers over 6,000 organizations to achieve their goals by helping them promote their websites via advertising on Google. Google ads appear when users search on Google. For example when you search for "world poverty" on Google, text ads related to world poverty appear on the right hand side. When you click on one of the ads, you are brought to the website being advertised.
Organizations that receive a Google Grant are awarded an in-kind online advertising account which can be used it in a variety of ways, including general outreach, fundraising activities, and recruitment of volunteers. Google Grants participants have found much success with the program. For example, the US Fund for UNICEF's e-commerce site, Shop UNICEF, experienced a 43 percent increase in sales over the previous year, while CoachArt – supporting children with life-threatening illnesses through art and athletics programs – has seen a 60 to 70 percent increase in volunteers.


Starbucks Shared Planet Youth Action Grants

The Starbucks Foundation is interested in supporting organizations that provide young people a continuum of services in developing creative approaches to address pressing concerns in their communities. We accept a letters of inquiry from organizations October 1st through December 1st. The online letter of inquiry form will be posted on the Youth Action Grants website on October 1st. The Starbucks Foundation will contact the organization directly if we'd like to request a full grant proposal.

Successful grant applicants will exhibit all of the following qualities:
• Deliver services to youth, ages 6 - 24
• Preference will be given to organizations that focus on young people in the age range of 12 and older, when they are able to take independent action
• Provides opportunity to combine learning with action that support communities and further global citizenship
• Deliver services, disseminate information, provide training and/or build broad networks
• Provide opportunities for Starbucks partners and multiple stores to be engaged in community service
