Core Tenets of Our Democracy

Today marks the 236th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Thomas Jefferson, who was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and our nation’s third president (1801-1809), wrote that “...governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed….”

And thirty-three years later, upon leaving the Presidency, Jefferson held that “to retire from office in better financial condition than one was in when elected would be dishonorable for it would indicate that he put his private interests above those of the public, or, worse was corrupt.”(*)

Regrettably, today many of our elected officials do not adhere to these core tenets of our democracy.
