FealGood Foundation Comment on NIOSHs Cancer Decision

Today, the National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) announced that all cancers recommended by the Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) will be included for medical treatment and monitoring under the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. The FealGood Foundation applauds NIOSH for its groundbreaking and accurate decision.

Since the Zadroga Act was enacted nearly a year and a half ago the 9/11 Community has lost many First Responders, Community Residents, Survivors and Volunteers to various forms of cancer. Countless others continue to fight their battle against this dreaded disease. The need to include cancers for coverage under Zadroga has become increasingly evident. As a result of NIOSHs decision today, men and women confronting cancer will be able to seek medical treatment without the overwhelming stress of paying insurance co-pays, treatment bills and other healthcare costs.

Additionally, NIOSH and the Centers of Excellence will now be able to more accurately document and study these cancers. With greater information and research at their fingertips, it is our sincere hope and expectation that they will be able to implement improved treatment procedures and medical care for the 9/11 Community.

Todays announcement is also a step in the right direction for coverage of other illnesses and epidemics that may arise in the future. By todays decision, NIOSH has shown that it will consider all factual information before it and that it is willing to make strong decisions in order to better serve the 9/11 Community.

On behalf of the FealGood Foundation I would like to thank NIOSH and its Director, Dr. John Howard, for its hard work, dedication and ultimately its decision to include cancers for coverage under the Zadroga Act. Many hours of intense analysis and research went into todays decision, and all those involved at NIOSH, the Centers for Disease Control, the Office of Management and Budget should be commended for their hard work.

A special thank you must also go to Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, Senator Christine Gillibrand, Senator Charles Schumer and the entire New York Congressional delegation. The extraordinary work of these elected officials helped enable todays decision and their continued belief in, and support of, the 9/11 Community is unmatched and appreciated.
