In this weeks edition of The Chief-Leader.

To The Editor, The Chief,

Thanks to "The Chief" for the informative article concerning the dispute over the 9/11 human remains at Ground Zero ("Fate of 9/11 Attackers, Victims' Remains Still Painful for Families"--4/22/11). Somewhat simultaneously, an editorial was published in another New York newspaper which was written by several 9/11 family members regarding the same topic. This published letter, in favor of the current interment plan for the human remains of the 9/11 victims, unfortunately echoes a familiar and sanctimonious point of view. To wit, the position espoused in the aforementioned editorial is one that misguidedly supports an interment proposal put forth by 9/11 Memorial and Museum (MM) Officials that most 9/11 families have never been aware of nor consulted on. Not surprisingly, MM Officials have also provided reams of paper and correspondence alluding to the fact that families have always been kept abreast of developments and they often refer to numerous meetings (ones that most family members never attended) where such notification was said to have taken place. Theirs has been a masterful public relations effort, but in reality it is pure and simple obfuscation. For the one thing they have not produced is the letter that was sent to EVERY family advising them of how they planned to inter the remains and simultaneously asking what each representative family would prefer in that regard. It has not been produced because it does not exist.
Even if during such meetings it was decided to place the human remains a dangerous and disrespectful seventy feet underground, (an assumption that many still contest) most family members were never subsequently notified by those groups that purportedly represented them. Nor were they notified by MM or NY City officials. It is indisputable that innumerable groups and 9/11 families were absent from these proceedings; first responders, for instance, had no official representation for each of their respective families during these (alleged) discussions.
The 9/11 Memorial and Museum Officials have always had the ability to notify each family regarding this (and every other 9/11) issue, but they have failed to do so. Furthermore, and most importantly, no individual or group (no matter how powerful and influential) has the right to speak for every family on an issue as singularly important as that of the human remains of their loved ones without prior notification to all concerned. The disposition of those remains should have the family members as their sole and final arbiter and neglecting to include ALL families in the process is shameful. The dissembling must end, and full, genuine notification should proceed immediately. And since so many seem enamored with the famous Virgilian quote, please consider this equally appropriate one from George Bernard Shaw that could apply to virtually every GZ issue where the 9/11 families and re-development officials have been involved: "The single biggest problem with communication is the illusion that it has taken place."
