Rally for 9/11 Bill by First Responders
Los Angeles (September 1, 2010) Firefighters from the LAFD and officers from the LAPD will join Councilmember Tom LaBonge in urging Congress to pass the 9/11 First Responders Act at a rally held on Friday, September 3 at 9 a.m. The event will be held at the Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center at 1700 Stadium Way. Ground Zero worker LAFD Chief Mario Rueda will speak about the importance of the measure. LAPD Chief Moore will also speak.
The press conference follows a citywide resolution entered by Councilmember LaBonge on Friday August 13, prior to President Obamas message of support for the bill. The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act* would provide first responders and those affected by the attack with long-term health care benefits for their exposure to toxins resulting from the collapse of the World Trade Center towers and compensation for economic losses due to illness or injuries caused by the attacks. The bill was not approved by Congress in July, but is expected to be introduced again. (*HR 847 and SB 1334)
Nearly 2,000 first responders from California traveled to assist in recovery and clean-up at the World Trade Center site. 900 police officers, firefighters and other Ground Zero workers, such as doctors and nurses, have died from causes related to the clean-up efforts.
