NEW YORK Ė With rising temperatures and severe storms expected for today, Con Edison is ready to respond to any service problems that may occur.
Con Edison urges customers to call 1-800-75-CONED promptly if they are experiencing any service difficulties. Customers can also report power interruptions or service problems, as well as view service restoration information online at www.conEd.com, and on their cell phones and PDAs.
The company offers the following safety tips for its customers:
∑ If you see downed electrical wires, do not go near them. Treat all downed wires as if they are live. Never attempt to move or touch them with any object. Be mindful that downed wires can be hidden from view by tree limbs, leaves or water.
∑ Report all downed wires to Con Edison and your local police department immediately. If a power line falls on your car while youíre in it, stay inside the vehicle and wait for emergency personnel.
∑ If your power goes out, turn off all lights and appliances to prevent overloaded circuits when power is restored. Leave at least one light switch in the on position to alert you when power has been restored.
Con Edison is also offering energy-savings tips to help save money while staying cool.
Some steps include:
∑ Making sure air conditioner filters are clean for peak efficiency;
∑ Setting thermostats no lower than 78 degrees. Each degree lower increases cooling costs by 6 percent;
∑ Closing off the rooms not being used if you have a room air-conditioner; if you have central air, block the vents in unused or vacant rooms;
∑ Turning off lights and other appliances, using a timer to turn them on as necessary;
∑ Running appliances such as ovens, washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers in the early morning or late at night when itís generally cooler. Another alternative: Using a microwave to cook, or a barbecue outside, if possible.
Energy-savings tips are available at www.conEd.com/thepowerofgreen , on Facebook at Power of Green, on Twitter @ConEdLiz and @ConEdSara and by downloading the companyís Power of Green iPhone app.
