FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

No. 230

STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON APPROVAL OF THE JAMES ZADROGA 9/11 HEALTH AND COMPENSATION ACT

“Today’s approval of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act by the House Energy and Commerce Committee is an important step towards ensuring that the appropriate resources are available to take care of those who need it most. The attacks of September 11th were an attack on this nation, and it’s only fitting that we as a nation take care of those who survived the attacks, and those who risked their lives to save others.

“I would like to thank everyone who helped get us to this point including the entire New York delegation, which has shown an unwavering commitment to this legislation, and in particular the House sponsors, Carolyn Maloney and Jerrold Nadler. I would also like to commend Chairman Waxman and the two New York City members on the Committee — Eliot Engel and Anthony Weiner — for their leadership in advancing the bill.”

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children offers tips on keeping children safe:
  • Make sure you know where each of your children is at all times.
  • Be involved in their activities and give them lots of attention and supervision.
  • Listen to them, especially if they talk about people they don't want to be around.
  • Teach them they can say no to unwelcome actions or touching by others.
  • Be sensitive to changes in their behavior or attitudes.
  • Screen babysitters and caregivers. Check references and sexual offender registries.
