|During the first week of the re-started sifting operation 36 potential remains have been uncovered.
To some this may come as a surprise but to those who have been following the entire process it is nothing less than we expected.
The material being sifted is from areas including the haul road and surrounding areas where it was predicted that many remains would be found.
These remains would have been found over a year and a half ago if the city did not stop the sifting process at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge.
While no good reason was given for stopping the operation many feel that the city did not want the volume of remains found to sharply increase had the process continued.
The process was stopped after many remains were found in material from these locations..
Many have said that the Haul Road was not built from fresh fill but from material scooped directly from the Ground Zero Pit.
During the dismantling of the Haul Road two steel beams were found.
The City never explained how steel beams from the WTC wound up in fresh fill.
So the three card monte recovery effort was put into effect once again.
Stop the process and for a year and half and the families will not realize that these remains came from the same place that nearly 500 remains were found before the sifting operation was stopped.
This same strategy has been used for years with the identification of remains as well.
The city refuses to identify if identified remains come from the initial operation or the second effort which was started only because of the remains that were accidentally uncovered in the Con Edison manholes and the Deutsche Building.
The city will also not release information on how many identifications have been accounted for using the new process (retesting) or from remains only tested once.
This strategy has also been deployed in the NYPD Property Department and the Medical Examiner’s Office where they refuse to use a computerized inventory system which could possibly lead to additional identifications because they are afraid it will also show how much cash and personal items have gone missing since 9/11.
So if we would have to venture a guess we would say the recent remains uncovered are just the tip of the iceberg and many more will be found.
Remains that should have been found years ago.
But why should we expect anything different.
From day one this was never about doing things correctly.
If it were JPAC would have been here years ago and the material at Fresh Kills would have been resifted as well.
