|Adam's Angels January 2010 Newsletter
We hope that you enjoyed the holiday season with your family and friends and that 2010 is going well for each one of you! It’s hard to believe that it’s already 2010. It seems like just yesterday we were ringing in the new millennium!
We’ve included an update on the progress of HR 847 advocacy (please scroll all the way down for detailed information regarding the bill) as well as a fairly large list of upcoming events that we are supporting in the coming months, including the Rich Forenza Memorial Fundraiser being held at Mulcahy’s on 1/30 (see the event listing, below) to raise money for the Nassau County Firefighters Burn Center.
Thank so much for your ongoing support. Together, we will make sure that those who put others first are ALWAYS taken care of and that their sacrifices are NEVER forgotten.

HR 847 Advocacy Update
Back on November 8th, while in meetings in DC, we were told by Nancy Pelosi’s office as well as Steny Hoyer’s office that because of the National Healthcare bill, all new bills requiring financial commitment from Congress were being put on hold. Prior to this, we were advised to set up an online and hard copy petition to show that HR 847 was an American issue and not just New York’s problem.
We were then advised to ask supporters of HR 847 to reach out to various members of Congress (both co-sponsors of the bill, as well as those who had not sponsored it) and demand that the bill be brought to the floor for a vote. This national effort launched full scale on December 7th and is currently continuing.
When the $70.7 million dollar bill to continue medical monitoring related to 9/11 was passed again for 2010, we were happy because this interim money is crucial until HR 847 can be passed.
On January 6th (see the Where to Turn blog about this conversation at: http://www.where-to-turn.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=50326), we spoke with both Stephanie and two members of Frank Pallone, Jr.’s office to find out the truth about the hold up of HR 847 being brought to the floor of Congress for a vote. The first thing we were told was that the Congressman was completely disrespected in a meeting about HR 847 and that certain Rep’s were no longer taking calls from these individuals.
We were also told that Rep Pallone does not have the ability to make Reps on his committee vote one way or the other. As with all bills, HR 847 needs to go through a committee process and many Reps believe that 9/11 health and compensation is a New York issue. Unfortunately, as we know so much in politics, some Reps take one position publicly and privately, they take another.
One huge sticking point is the immigration fight of undocumented workers that will take place when this goes to committee. The other is the community program for lower Manhattan residents who are very ill. The program in the bill that makes them eligible for health care and compensation is an issue with some Reps because, again, they think that this is a New York problem. However, we were told that Rep Pallone is trying to work through these issues and work with the committee members.
We were also told that Congress is facing healthcare reform and that when Bills move, they take resources from all offices and that all Reps are all working on health reform.
We were told that painting Rep Pallone as a person who isn’t on the side of 9/11 first responders and isn’t working on behalf of them through HR 847 is not accurate. We were told that Rep Pallone supports the bill and 9/11 first responders and that HR 847 will be the first thing Rep Pallone’s committee works on as soon as healthcare is done.
We have continued to speak with Rep Pallone and his office and have asked Rep Pallone to consider co-sponsoring HR 847 to show his commitment to the 9/11 first responders.
On January 15th, we were told, in writing, that Rep Pallone had made great progress in again speaking with the members of his committee regarding HR 847 and that while they still had to wait until after health reform was finished, they would be able to set up a date for HR 847 markup once this was done. We were told that while a few things still needed to be handled, they are in a good place. We were also informed that unfortunately, while some people seem to have good intentions, the way they continue to speak to Congress members as well as members of their staff is completely out of line and disrespectful.
We ask that if you call Rep Pallone’s office or any other United States Congress member, that you please act respectfully. While everyone has the same goal of getting HR 847 passed, going in with organized, well spoken thoughts and allowing the person you are on the phone to actually respond to your questions will go a long way.

Year ‘Round, On Going- Operation Sending Smiles Across the Miles - THANKS to our military for GIVING us Freedom!
Our signature program was started when troops were first being deployed to Afghanistan after 9/11/01 and is still going strong. This holiday season and all year, as our military fights to endure freedoms that we sometimes take for granted, we are proud to support our service members and hope you will join us. This is an EXCELLENT opportunity for families, fire departments, schools, senior centers, etc. Basically, what we do is encourage people to not only say they support our troops, but act on it by sending cards, care packages and more importantly, personal hygiene products are very much needed (these units are mobile and sometimes can't shower for a week at a time, so they need wipes, deodorant, bar soap, foot spray, baby powder & toothpaste. For more information, please email AdamsAngels@gmail.com
Year Round Call to Action--- ALL HANDS NEEDED ADAM’S ANGELS URGE ALL AMERICANS TO TAKE A STAND AND DEMAND THAT HR 847- THE JAMES ZADROGA 9/11 HEALTH AND COMPENSATION BILL BE BROUGHT TO THE FLOOR OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES BY THE END OF THE YEAR.
Beginning Monday, December 7th, Adam’s Angels are asking all Americans to take a stand and demand that HR 847- The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2009 be brought to the floor of the House of Representatives, immediately. Gaining as much public support as possible, as quickly as possible, from concerned citizens throughout the United States of America will allow immediate pressure on the House of Representatives to put HR 847 on their weekly schedule for a vote.
While it speaks volumes that 9/11 first responders (primarily those who are suffering from illnesses related to their time at the WTC site), along with their respective constituency groups, have been advocating for the passage of HR 847- The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2009, it is time that all Americans fight on behalf of them. These men and women thought of their fellow Americans first, and foremost before heading to the WTC site, in the wake of September 11, 2001.
We, as Americans, must stand together united on this issue and make it known that we will not accept empty promises. Together, we will make sure that those who put others first are ALWAYS taken care of and that their sacrifices are NEVER forgotten.
Adam’s Angels are asking that all Americans please take a moment out of their day to call the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi at 202-225-0100 and the Majority Leader of the House, Steny Hoyer at 202-225-4131 and let them know that as proud Americans, we demand to see HR 847 brought to the floor, immediately. Callers are asked to say that as Americans, we will not sit by and allow those who put others first be taken for granted.
Having lost over eight hundred September 11th first responders since that horrific day, we must act now as many, many more of our Nation’s Heroes are sick and dying due to the time they spent at the World Trade Center site. We would like to stress how important the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2009 is to us, our community and America. It is time to get this bill to the House floor and passed so that those who put America first on September 11, 2001 are taken properly taken care of, now. We want HR 847 passed so that we, as a country, can properly thank the thousands who have given so much of themselves, so selflessly. We have lost over eight hundred September 11th first responders since that horrific day, we MUST act now as many, many more of these men and women are sick and dying due to the time they spent at Ground Zero.
How to Take Action, Now if your Representative is on the list of co-sponsors (see below), please contact them and demand that they help get HR 847 to the floor by the end of 2009- ask them to take an urgent and immediate stand, with us. If your Rep is not currently supporting HR 847, please call them and stress how important HR 847- the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2009 is to you, your community and America. It is time to get this bill to the House floor and passed so that those who put America first on September 11, 2001 are taken properly taken care of, NOW. The list of all United States Reps and their contact information can be found at: http://www.house.gov/house/MemberWWW.shtml
