|When we first started Where to Turn over 8 years ago our goal was to continue to support the 9/11 families and to create community programs that would address needs and get people more involved in community activities.
Over the past eight years we have been moderately successful.
Every year we
Shovel for over 600 senior citizens
Clean up over 500 tagged locations
We work on at least 25 beach, park and cemetery cleanups
We distribute toys and gifts to over 2,000 needy individuals
But even more importantly we are getting people involved and creating solutions
Last year we coordinated the painting of 51 American Flag murals
This spring we will make over 150 prom dresses available so that some young ladies might go to prom.
But we are also making connections
We have worked with
Almost every school on Staten Island
Richmond County Criminal Court
The Parks Department
The Mayor’s Office
The NY Blood Center
South Beach Psychiatric
The American Cancer Society
And many other organizations.
We have worked with students from almost every school on Staten Island and this year we will once again honor student athletes through our Academic All County Awards.
But more importantly more and more people are calling with issues and also wanting to get involved.
We are currently cleaning up Asbury Methodist Cemetery and are looking to create the first dog walkers park on Staten Island to maintain the property.
We are working on plans to restore the studio at South Beach Psychiatric and create programs through which we can teach students the ins and outs of production in a real studio.
And the icing on the cake is we are moving forward with the Hearts and Hands 9/11 Memorial to keep our promise that we made 8 years ago.
And we continue to try innovative programs.
We are looking into recruiting 100 people into our Take a Load Off Staten Island Program.
The participants will commit to losing 20 pounds beginning January 1,
We will look for people to sponsor them at $1 a pound and will use all money raised to restock the food pantries on Staten Island to provide food to those who really need it.
We also will begin to collect used bicycles and working with a national organization we will get them to third world countries where they are the primary form of transportation.
These are just a few ideas.
We are sure you have some as well and look forward to working with you as we move into 2010.
