From Sat Oct 24, 2009 3:00 am to Wed Nov 18, 2009 1:59 am (included)
As you know we just completed the Flags Across Staten Island Project.
I would personally like to thank Scott for his tireless efforts in helping us get this project completed.
In just 18 months we were able to complete 51 American Flag murals all over Staten Island.
And this project was not just about painting flags.
It involved getting court ordered youth offenders to clean up graffiti at many of the sites.
It involved businesses, churches, civic groups, individuals, schools, foundations and elected officials working together to show that they care about Staten Island.
It showed that as a borough we are proud of our neighborhoods and more importantly proud of our nation.
It was an honor to be a part of the project and I would once again thank Scott, Jimmy Oddo and all the people listed because without them we would not have gotten this done.
We are currently putting together a you tube slide show of all the sites as well as a poster with all the completed murals which will be available shortly.
We are still looking to raise some money to cover the cost of the last mural. Any tax deductible contributions would be greatly appreciated.
We will continue our graffiti cleanups and may do a few more flags next year including the possibility of a major one on New Dorp High School.
Where to Turn has completed 340 cleanups and our goal is to complete 500 by years end.
We began our major cleanup at Asbury Methodist Cemetery which will continue into the spring.
Our goal is to have the complete abandoned cemetery restored by spring.
We are also looking into the possibility of creating the first community supported dog walking park around the cemetery as a way to maintain the property,
We had over 25 Where to Turn volunteers helping today and got a lot accomplished.
Although we sent letters to every candidate and asked to supply some of their campaign volunteers to help out.
Unfortunately we did not have one show up.
While we recognize how important campaigning is we think that having their campaign volunteers help out on a community project is not too much to ask.
We will continue to ask for involvement form our candidates and their volunteers through our Campaigning for Our Community Program and will keep you posted.
We have already gotten 150 students re-registered for our Snow Shoveling for Seniors Program. Unfortunately every time we ask for more volunteers we get more seniors registered. Just last week we received 113 calls from seniors looking to register.
We hope you will get your children or grandchildren involved and ask you to make sure their schools are promoting the program.
We continue to collect prom dresses and currently have 125 which we will have dry cleaned and made available to less fortunate girls for next prom season.
We will also be kicking off our Toy Drive and Re-Gifting for a Good Cause Program next week.
Last week we were able to distribute over 2,500 toys and redistribute unwanted gifts to another 500 families.
We are still looking for local schools to join our Adopt a School for Disaster Relief Network.
Finally we are going to kick of the initial cleanup of the property for our $6.5 Million Hearts and Hands Memorial next month.
We hope you will join us in our efforts.
