Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency..Has Anyone Ever Followed Up

The papers have been filled with stories about more and more former recovery workers becoming sick with 9/11 related illnesses.

It was reported over 2 years ago that there is a link to the illnesses that some of the WTC recovery workers (firefighters included) have to a genetic defect.

The condition called Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency increases the risk of COPD and lung disease when combined with environmental factors (smoke, dust particles etc.).

A simple blood test would determine if any current or former recovery workers have this defect.

This test should also be a part of the regimen of tests before someone is allowed to be become a firefighter.

Although this defect is not widespread an applicant to the FDNY should be made aware of the potential medical risks if they have this defect as should any recovery worker..

Even though we raised these concerns back in January we have heard nothing about checking former recovery workers for this defect. We have also not heard of this being added as a requirement to the FDNY physical.

One would think that the city would publicize this test and offer it to anyone who worked down at Ground Zero.

Although it might be too late for some, even if we identify a few people with the defect we may be able to treat them in advance and possibly prevent future illness.
