March 2009

Dear Friends:

I recently warned my constituents about aggressive individuals who were going door to door in certain neighborhoods claiming to be Con Edison employees and asking to see copies of homeowners’ utility bills. The following informational brochure about this practice was recently forwarded to me by the New York State Consumer Protection Board: http://www.nysconsumer.gov/pdf/consumer_tips_door_to_door_esco.pdf.

As you will note, the Consumer Protection Board has issued certain common sense guidelines for consumers concerning the door-to-door marketing of energy services. I urge you to read the informative brochure and take proper precautions to protect yourself.

The NYS Consumer Protection Board has also recently issues its 2009 new scam alert where it warns consumers of the newest forms of internet scams or other attempts at consumer fraud. Visit http://www.nysconsumer.gov/recent_scams.htm to see the 2009 and 2008 lists.

As always, my staff and I are here to assist you with any matters of concern. Simply email me directly at joddo@council.nyc.gov or call us at (718) 980-1017.

Very truly yours,

Jim Oddo
