As February draws to a close we thought we would give you an update as to where we are and where we are going.

The Snow Shoveling for Seniors program once again drew over 625 students and it looks like that will be back out tomorrow as they are calling for another major storm.

We continue to build our network with over 800 organizations linked through our Crisis Relief Network.

We continue to recruit volunteers through our website and hope to build on the over 10,000 hours that students volunteered last year through our site.

We will continue to track volunteer hours through our Student Volunteer Database.

We are happy to see that the Borough President’s Office is now joining in this effort as is the Mayor’s Office.

We are also asking all those running for office to dedicate their campaign volunteers to a local project for one day through our “Campaigning for Our Community Program.

We just sent out over 500 invitations to local not for profits for our IV Information Forum scheduled for April 4 at the South Beach Psychiatric Center.

Not for Profits will be able present their programs and recruit volunteers at this free event

Partnering with Island Voice we are offering 4 hours of community credit for any student who attends.

We will also link any not for profit’s website to our network and create web pages for those who do not have sites.

We will also post their upcoming events and volunteer needs on our site.

We are also asking everyone to volunteer 20 hours in 2009 through the IV…. I Volunteer Program.

Participants can also join through our Facebook Group at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=67758697570#/group.php?gid=48537882559

This will be the first step in our Community Circle as we plan to meet each quarter with grass root groups from all over the Island and come up with common sense solutions to issues facing Staten Islanders.

We got a head start on graffiti and have completed over 50 cleanups and plan to have weekly outings with each precinct to keep pace with the problem.

The Courts keep sentencing juvenile offenders to Where to Turn and we will continue to require them to clean up graffiti to satisfy their sentences.

We are meeting with the Mayor’s Community Assistance Unit this week to discuss better ways to tackle the graffiti problem.

Scott has completed 28 murals and we are looking for sponsors for the remaining 22. We are also looking for local businesses to support our “Strike Out Graffiti” Initiative

We will continue to work with the NYPD Graffiti Task Force and should have the first Flashcam in service this week with hopes of getting funding from our local elected officials for two additional units.

Letters are going out this week to all our local High Schools to identify their senior varsity athletes who have maintained academic excellence.

These students will once again be honored through our Academic All County Awards Program at St. Johns in May.

We have submitted a proposal to both the Senate and the House to set up a fund that will fund medical benefits for recent retirees who volunteer 20 hours a week for not for profits,

Finally we are still working with HUD to begin our Hearts and Hands Memorial for 9/11 Victims.

We are meeting with the FDNY Family Advisory Board next week to present our plans.

We currently have nearly 5,000 supporters of the Memorial through our Hearts and Hands Cause on Facebook at http://apps.facebook.com/causes/185394?m=3f1cca43

We welcome your comments and support.
