Clean Water Collaborative - Stimulus Update

Dear All,

One of the things that has been observed is how infrequently people talk about human waste disposal. Sure, we have been taught to shy away from bathroom humor. Maybe it's because we think it's impolite or crude. But considering our water infrastructure system is over 100 years old and breaking down daily and there is waste backing up in residents homes, and entering into our waterways. For the sake of public health and safety we have to put our shyness aside.

Restoring our water infrastructure should be on everyone's lips. It is hugely important that we talk about our NY Water Infrastructure needs to everyone, and that includes talking about it to our politicians, so that they become accustom to talking about it. Staten Island beyond a shadow of a doubt needs to receive the proper amount of funding for the water infrastructure improvements that it so desperately needs! Please get this message out there to everyone that you know and even those people that you don't.

Scroll down and thank you for your time.

Subject: Clean Water Collaborative - Stimulus Update

Hi All -

Below is a quick update re what the federal stimulus package now has for water
and wastewater:

$4B for Wastewater = $421M for NYS
$2B for Drinking = $83M for NYS

50% must be for loan forgiveness (grants)
20% must be for green infrastructure
Projects must proceed to construction within 12 months

We are still digesting the language and will need to discuss provisions with

While the total amount of funding is less than we hoped, I am pleased that
funding for water and wastewater remains in the stimulus. The total funding for
wastewater is more than the last 4 federal annual appropriations combined. In
addition, for the first time in almost 20 years grants are allowed under the SRF
for wastewater infrastructure. There is also a clear recognition of the
importance of green infrastructure. Perhaps most importantly, our concerted
efforts to educate Congress and the public on the need for this funding
positions us well for our longer term goal of a sustainable program for water
infrastructure funding.

The House has passed and the Senate must vote once more on this package. It will
then will be sent to President Obama. He plans to sign it on President's Day.

Thanks for all your help on this!

Yours truly,
