Maloney, Nadler React to Mt. Sinai 9/11 Health Study

--Report shows 24% of responders have abnormal lung function--

Reps. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) and Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) released the following statement in response to a report issued today by Mt. Sinai Medical Center showing that more than 24 percent of 3,160 9/11 responders participating in a long-term health study continue to have abnormal lung function more than seven years after the World Trade Center attacks:

"Those injured in the aftermath of 9/11 and still suffering more than seven years after the attacks are waiting for the care and compensation they deserve,” Rep. Maloney said. “Mt. Sinai's report shows yet again why we must pass the 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, which Reps. Nadler, King, McMahon, and I reintroduced yesterday with bipartisan support."

“The Mt. Sinai report released this week demonstrates with stark clarity why we must act immediately to solve the health crisis caused by 9/11,” said Rep. Nadler. “We must take care of our sick first responders and show them the respect and care they deserve. It’s now time that we come together and quickly pass the 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.”

Background: H.R. 847, the 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, would provide medical monitoring and treatment for those exposed to toxins released by the collapse of the World Trade Center towers. The bill would also provide compensation for economic losses due to illnesses or injuries caused by the attacks.

The previous version of the bill was set to be considered by the House last fall but because of the financial crisis and other factors, it had to be delayed. The Members of Congress are hopeful that the bill will have strong bipartisan support when it is voted on by the House in the coming months. In addition, during his presidential campaign President Barack Obama signaled his strong support for helping the heroes and heroines of 9/11.
