As 2008 draws to a close we look forward to continuing our efforts to support and inform the 9/11 families as we expand our community programs.

Below are a few of our goals for 2009.

Hearts and Hands Memorial

We are just awaiting the Environmental Impact Report. As soon as we receive we will begin the design work and move forward with the initial cleanup of the existing structures.

We will also begin filming a documentary of the entire project and will be reaching out to family members for photos and additional information for the Corridor of Memories.

We are attempting to have the United in Memory 9/11 Quilt displayed again in NY in 2009 possibly on the Intrepid in September

We will begin formal fundraising on 2/1/09

Crisis Relief Network

We will be continuing our daily updates and will be expanding our forums and hope to include links to every not for profit on Staten Island.

We will also be performing a careful review of all of our current 800 links to assure up to date data particularly with 9/11 organizations.

Where to Turn Community Circle

Over the years we have met and worked with many organizations, schools, religious institutions, government agencies, civic and community groups, media outlets and elected officials.

In 2009 we will begin a pilot program called “The Where to Turn Community Circle”

The goal of the circle is to bring together members of the various groups that we work with to discuss and address everyday issues.

Using the same approach that was used after 9/11 we hope to be able to address these issues with open discussions and common sense solutions.

Bringing together people from all ages, races, religions and walks of life we hope to offer a unique forum for people to voice their concerns and work on solutions.

Unlike other groups this one will be open to all.

The pilot program will focus on the needs of Staten Island but we hope to develop a template that other will be able to follow.

If you would like to join us as we develop our “Community Circle” please contact us at dennis.mckeon@where-to-turn.org or call us at 718-966-6531 if you have any questions.

The great thing about a circle is that it does not have an end.

We hope our “Community Circle” follows that lead as participating youth become our middle age support and our senior brain trust and then everything old will become new again with the next wave of participants.

Changing the Face of Staten Island Graffiti Removal Program

We will continue weekly cleanups and will work with court ordered offenders to continue our efforts to combat graffiti.

We will attempt to surpass 2008 accomplishments (810 sites cleaned our 1,000 community service hours logged)

We will also attempt to get more schools involved and will offer community service credit for waivers submitted.

Flags Across Staten Island

We will build on the 26 completions in 2008.

Scott will continue to paint murals during the winter weather permitting and we will complete 50 murals prior to Memorial Day 2009

We are recruiting sponsors and student volunteers to carry photos of the murals in the 2009 Memorial Day Parade.

Academic All County Awards

We will once again honor student athletes who maintain academic excellence.

Seniors participating in a varsity sport who maintain a 90% GPA in both their junior and senior years will be honored at a ceremony at St. Johns in May.

Re-Gifting for a Good Cause

We will collect gifts throughout the year at our various drop off locations.

Toys and clothes will be distributed to needy families.

CD’s and DVD’s will be sent to soldiers in military hospitals.

Everything else will be sold at a flea market in the spring.

All proceeds will be used to support Where to Turn Programs.

Gift of Life

We will be working with the NY Blood Center in an attempt to double blood donations in 2009

Community service credit will be given to students who donate or who recruit family and friends to donate.

We are asking everyone on the Where to Turn distribution to donate 4 times next year.

Where to Turn will also be hosting a blood drive and scholarships will be awarded to the schools that exceed donation goals.

We are looking to collect at least 200 pints during the drive.

“The Proper Recognition of Deceased Staten Island Veterans’ Project”

We will continue to work with the Friends of Abandoned Cemeteries to supply information to the Veterans Administration to replace grave markers of Veterans in Staten Island Cemeteries.

We are looking to recruit High School juniors and seniors as well as college students to do the required research.

Marker replacements will be scheduled for the spring 2009.

We will also continue our efforts to protect children from accidents and stop the closing of fire houses.

We will continue to act as a voice for people who have been lost in the red tape of bureaucracy.

We will continue to work with local organizations including Project Hospitality and Island Voice and with our elected officials to find common sense solutions to these issues at local and national levels.

And we will continue to create and expand programs to get students more involved in their communities.

We look forward to 2009 and hope that you will support us as we attempt to make life a little bit easier for those in need in these troubled times.

For more information on these and other programs or to find out how you can become involved visit our website at www.where-to-turn.org

As always thank you in advance for your continued support.

May you find nothing but happiness in the coming year and may your worst days in 2009 be better than your best were in 2008.

Happy New Year
