As you know we have been distributing toys this weekend to needy children.

We were supposed to meet members of the Daughters of Africa with about 75 toys this morning.

We waited at the meet point on Castleton Ave this morning at 9:00.

At about 9:15 a car pulled up behind us.

I got out and introduced myself and asked the woman if she was here to pick up the toys from Where to Turn.

She said yes and she helped me transport the toys into her car.

I wished her a Merry Christmas and headed over to the 122 Precinct to make sure no kids showed up for the cancelled graffiti cleanup.

On the way my phone rang.

It was a representative from the Daughters of Africa.

They wanted to know where I was.

I told them I was heading back after dropping off the toys.

To my surprise they told me that they had just gotten to the drop off site and were waiting for me.

As you must realize by now the woman at the drop off point was not from the Daughters of Africa and it appears that she just took advantage of an opportunity for some free toys.

I went back to my apartment and got replacement toys so that the kids the toys were for would have gifts for their party.

So at least the Staten Island Grinch didn’t steal their Christmas.

I didn’t want these kids to suffer because of my stupidity.

I guess I have to be more careful in the future even at Christmas time.

Dennis

I still have almost 200 toys if anyone knows of families with “LEGITIMATE” needs.
