FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NY Giants Legends to Join Retired Co-Captain

George Martin at “a Journey for 9/11” Benefit Gala at the Sports Museum of America in Manhattan on

Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008

Star-Studded Dinner/Sports Auction Will Benefit Ailing Ground Zero Rescue and Recovery Workers

Martin to Detail His Recent 3,003-Mile Charitable Walk Across America and Make Sizeable Donations to Three Area Hospitals Treating 9/11 Workers

New York, NY (August 27, 2008) -- Retired New York Giants star defensive end and team co-captain George Martin, who recently completed a historic 3,003-mile charitable walk from New York City to San Diego, today announced the first “a Journey for 9/11” fund-raising gala, set for Saturday night, Sept. 20, 2008. All net proceeds from the event will benefit thousands of Ground Zero rescue and recovery workers now ailing as a result of their service in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. Tickets to the gala are available for purchase to the public.

The dinner and sports auction will be held at the new Sports Museum of America (www.sportsmuseum.com) in lower Manhattan. Joining Mr. Martin will be many New York Football Giants alumni, including Harry Carson, Andy Robustelli, Frank Gifford, Tiki Barber, Mark Bavaro, Brad Benson, Billy Ard, Derek Brown, Howard Cross, Curtis McGriff, Karl Nelson, Rodney Hampton, Sean Landeta, Zeke Mowatt, Billy Taylor, Brian Saxton, John Booty, Don Herrmann, Mike Friede, John Baker and others. Newscaster Maurice DuBois of WCBS-TV will serve as Master of Ceremonies.

Also attending will be several ailing 9/11 workers, representing World Trade Center responders from all 50 states who are now in dire need of medical monitoring and treatment. Recognizing that government and insurance programs are not adequately meeting the medical needs of these heroic people, Mr. Martin set out on his “a Journey for 9/11” to raise awareness about their plight and money for their care. To date, Journey has raised more than $2 million.

Donations Totaling $750,000 to Hospitals at Gala

At the gala, Mr. Martin and the Journey Board will present checks from the Journey of $250,000 each (the equivalent of $1.5 million in medical services) to representatives of Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC; NJ), North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health Systems (NSLIJ; NY) and the Mt. Sinai Medical Center (NY), three area hospitals now monitoring and treating 9/11 workers. The hospitals are matching in medical services the total funds Mr. Martin’s Journey donates to them. Each hospital has purchased a table at the gala. HUMC and NSLIJ have also funded additional tables to host attending 9/11 workers.

The Super Bowl XXI champion’s remarkable transcontinental walk through 13 states began on Sept. 16, 2007, on the New York side of the George Washington Bridge and finished on June 21, 2008, in San Diego. “Our walk has finished, but our Journey’s mission surely continues,” said Mr. Martin, who has returned to his position as vice president of sports marketing at AXA Equitable. “This gala and auction will be a terrific night for all who attend, and a productive one for heroes in need. Ameri ca needs to step forward to support those who sacrificed to help save and rebuild our nation.”

Purchase Tickets to Dine with NY Giants Legends

Attendees will dine with legendary Giants alumni and can bid on valuable sports memorabilia, autographed jerseys and other collectibles. Tickets for individual seats and corporate tables are available. For more information about the event or to purchase tickets, visit www.aJourneyfor911.Info/920Event, or contact Michele Delsordo at 732-245-5145.

The Medical Problems of Working at Ground Zero

The Journey is raising funds to provide medical monitoring and healthcare for 9/11 responders who are suffering from chronic bronchial disease, leukemia and other cancers, post traumatic stress disorder and other medical conditions stemming from their service at Ground Zero after the attacks of September 11, 2001.

Medical studies indicate that working at Ground Zero led to serious, long-term medical problems for tens of thousands of 9/11 responders.

A study by Mt. Sinai Medical Center found that nearly 70 percent of the 40,000+ 9/11 responders have suffered lung disease and other health problems.
One in five has low lung capacity, five times the normal rate.
One in eight developed Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (Source: NYC Department of Mental Health and Hygiene).
The rate of those developing asthmatic conditions after exposure to Ground Zero is 12 times the normal adult rate.

In October 2007, Mr. Martin walked through Washington, DC, where he met with several members of the U.S. Congress who are advocating legislation for additional funding for 9/11 healthcare programs. About George Martin, the Route and the Journey Team

George Martin was a star defensive end and co-captain of the Super Bowl XXI Champion New York Giants (1986). During his 14 NFL seasons (1975-1988), the longtime Giant scored eight touchdowns -- seven of them as a defensive lineman, which set an NFL record that stood until 2007. Mr. Martin is a former president of the NFL Players Association.

On a Journey for 9/11, Mr. Martin, 55, passed through portions of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. The retired NFL great lost more than 40 pounds during his trek, during which he visited schools, fire houses, police stations, government offices, and other places where he raised awareness about the plight of Ground Zero workers.

For his charitable efforts, Mr. Martin was named one of ABC News’ 2007 “Persons of the Year,” received the prestigious Heisman Humanitarian Award, and was recognized with an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey for his lifelong commitment to community service.
