BLOOD SHORTAGE IN NEW YORK METRO AREA
NYBC Appeals for Help

June 16, 2008- With the long holiday week and summer season looming, New York
Blood Center and its regional operations (serving New York City, Long Island, Hudson Valley and New Jersey) have issued a public appeal for blood donations.

Hospital demand for blood has increased beyond seasonal expectations while levels of
blood donation have been below forecast due to blood drive cancellations linked to the
recent heat wave. Blood supplies have dropped below the 5-day safety level.

“We have already begun rationing certain blood types to area hospitals,” said Dr. Robert L. Jones, New York Blood Center President & CEO. “Because the New York area has never been self-sufficient in meeting its own need for blood, we are vulnerable to the effects of poor weather and natural disasters occurring far from New York which have crimped the availability of blood from outside the metropolitan area.”

“We are facing increasing pressure to meet predictable needs for blood and must also have a safety margin to respond to any type of large scale public disaster that can quickly deplete even a healthy blood supply. We simply cannot meet our vital, life-saving mission and ensure quality health care delivery without immediate assistance from volunteer blood donors,” said Dr. Jones.

Less than two percent of eligible residents of New York and New Jersey donate blood each year compared to the nationwide average of five percent. “Our community has long lagged behind the rest of the nation but today we face a very serious situation. Blood is perishable {red cells last 42 days and platelets just 5 days} and requires daily replenishment,” Dr. Jones remarked.
