To All,

Below please find our letter to the editor in response to Mr. Wortmann’s letter of 6/16. Although things are not perfect (still no word on the Clean Team Truck) I thought it was important to recognize what Councilman Oddo and some of our other elected officials are doing to combat the graffiti problem on Staten Island.

I have also placed the link to Mr. Wortmann’s letter below.

Dear Editor,

Councilman Oddo and our other elected officials are doing all that they can to combat the graffiti problem on Staten Island. Our Councilmen are currently working with the mayor's office attempting to make restitution and community service a mandatory part of sentencing in Family Court. Judges in Staten Island's Criminal Court now require offenders to satisfy their sentences through my organization and they are required to remove graffiti island wide. The NYPD has been doing a great job and graffiti arrests are up significantly over the past three months. Senator Lanza has introduced legislation to require stricter sentences for offenders. In regards to the fines, they require property owners to either remove graffiti or sign a waiver giving the city or its agents permission to remove it. We have set up a process where the waivers are forwarded to Where to Turn and we coordinate the cleanups. We have been doing paintovers with volunteers as well as outings with offenders satisfying their sentences. We have also purchased an industrial power washer and do those cleanups with a non toxic graffiti remover (no chemicals). We have used this remover on numerous locations, including PVC fences, and have had great success. Unfortunately in this time of endless litigation a waiver of responsibility is necessary. We currently only have limited colors of paint for the paintovers but if the property owner provides a different color paint we will use it. Since April Councilman Oddo's office and other sources have provided us with over 150 waivers and to date we have cleaned up nearly 100 locations. We are working closely with all three precincts and will be scheduling cleanups throughout the year. We continue to do this at no expense to the property owner. Most of the financial support comes from our elected officials and foundations supporting this program. So Mr. Wortmann although I understand your frustration in this type of situation you are either part of the solution or part of the problem. I am happy that Councilman Oddo and most of our other elected officials have decided be part of the solution.
