We continue to get additional volunteers for the Snow Shoveling for Seniors Program and the weather has been very accommodating. But when the snow does come we will be at the ready with 550 volunteers. We are still looking for additional volunteers. Anyone interested can contact us at 718-966-6531 or at http://www.where-to-turn.org/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=42

We are continuing our efforts to get HR Bill 4462 passed and have 9,9667 signatures on our petition. (http://www.where-to-turn.org/petition_hr4266.php)
When we reach 10,000 we will be organizing a trip to Washington with families that have lost children and will personally deliver a request for support to every member of the House and the Senate. We would like to thank Congressman Fossella for being one of the few who have signed on to support. We could use additional help. For more information go to http://www.where-to-turn.org/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=33

As part of our community outreach we will be reaching out to Norman Siegel to see if we can take legal action against the DEP and the DEC for the way the Brookfield Landfill Capping has been handled. Just last week the DEC sprung the news on us that the funding that had always been promised was not guaranteed and that the DEC would have to redo their paperwork as the Title III money which had funded all of the other project would not be available for the Brookfield Project and the DEC would have to apply under another program. This is just the latest stalling tactic from these agencies just as we expected the contract to be awarded to start the capping project. Although Councilman Ignizio and Assemblyman Tobacco will be addressing this through their offices we feel that the time has come to take some outside action even if it means a lawsuit. The Staten Island community has been lied to, and kept in the dark for too long.

We will de sending out letters later this month looking for candidates for this year’s Academic All County Awards

We continue to develop our Teenage Gambling Treatment Program and have sent a letter to our local elected about the growing gambling problem. For more info go to http://www.where-to-turn.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=41194

Since the weather has been so mild we have been able to continue our Graffiti Removal Outings and have cleaned up multiple sites. We will be coordinating an outing next weekend with Councilman Oddo’s office. (http://www.where-to-turn.org/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=41)

We applaud Assemblywoman Janele Hyer-Spencer for her attempt to bring NROC to Staten Island to assist seniors (http://www.where-to-turn.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=41439) and have contacted her to tell her we will assist in any way needed.

High School students who are 18 or who will turn 18 prior to Election Day can register to vote. We have set up a link on our homepage where students can click and register (http://www.where-to-turn.org/index.php)

We continue to receive gifts through our Re-Gifting for a Good Cause Program and have received nearly 3,000 to date. We are currently looking for a location for our Flea Market in the spring. (http://www.where-to-turn.org/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=56)

Last but not least we have been working behind the scenes on our Hearts and Hands Project and you can expect news soon.

Dennis
