CLINTON CALLS ON PRESIDENT TO HONOR FALLEN 9/11 HERO

Asks for Volunteer Firefighter and EMT to be Awarded the Medal of Valor

Washington, DC – Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton today called on President Bush to recognize the heroic efforts of Glenn J. Winuk, a New York resident who died in the 9/11 attacks while aiding rescue efforts, by awarding him the Medal of Valor.

In a letter to the President, Senator Clinton wrote, "It is long past the time that Glenn receives this other honor that he deserves: the Medal of Valor.”

Senator Clinton's letter to the President follows:

January 18, 2008

The Honorable George W. Bush

The White House

Washington, D.C. 20500

Dear Mr. President:

On September 9, 2005, you appropriately remembered 442 heroes who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 and awarded them with the Medal of Valor. At the ceremony you said you recognized “a group of Americans whose bravery and commitment to their fellow citizens showed us the true meaning of heroism.” However, the name of one brave American who gave the ultimate sacrifice that day was missing from that distinguished group.

I am writing to ask that you recognize the bravery and commitment of Glenn J. Winuk, a Manhattan resident originally from Jericho, New York, by awarding him the Medal of Valor. Glenn worked as an attorney in Lower Manhattan and served his community as a volunteer firefighter and EMT for over 19 years. On 9/11, Glenn rushed from his law office to assist in the evacuation of the World Trade Center towers in the immediate aftermath of the attacks. After identifying himself as a rescue professional, Glenn borrowed a mask, gloves, and a medic bag in order to aid in the rescue and evacuation mission. He died courageously when the South Tower fell, the medic bag by his side.

Following Glenn’s sacrifice, his family was forced to fight long and hard to receive federal recognition for Glenn and the benefits to which they were entitled. Finally, this week, after a four-year battle for recognition from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), his family has been promised survivor benefits under the DOJ’s Public Safety Officers’ Benefits Act (PSOB).

It is long past the time that Glenn receives this other honor that he deserves: the Medal of Valor. I hope you will consider this request.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,

Hillary Rodham Clinton
