NYDIS Receives “Partners in Preparedness” Honor from City
OEM Commissioner Joseph Bruno Hosts Reception at Gracie Mansion
October 3, 2007, New York, NY…On September 26, 2007, New York Disaster Interfaith Services (NYDIS) received the “Ready New York Partners in Preparedness” honor from the New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) for outstanding commitment to Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Education. OEM Commissioner Joseph Bruno presided over the “Partners in Preparedness” ceremony at a reception at Gracie Mansion, at which the New York Mets were also honored for their contributions to the City’s overall preparedness.
The “Ready New York Partners in Preparedness” honor recognizes the role that NYDIS plays in educating the public about preparing for emergencies. NYDIS offers emergency training for New York City’s faith leaders and clergy, holds annual Disaster Preparedness Summits, hosts workshops and conferences throughout the year, and produces educational materials such as Disaster Tip Sheets and “The NYDIS Manual for NYC Religious Leaders: Spiritual Care and Mental Health for Disaster Response and Recovery.” These initiatives and resources serve to help religious and secular organizations collaborate to optimize their knowledge about emergency and disaster preparedness. Additionally, NYDIS is promoting the 9/11 WTC Workers’ Compensation Registration’s extended deadline with outreach efforts throughout the five boroughs, including an MTA subway poster campaign.
In presenting the award, Commissioner Bruno called NYDIS a key partner with OEM in delivering disaster preparedness trainings and services to NYC faith communities. He also noted that in response to emergencies, NYDIS provides OEM with information about the available resources of the City’s houses of worship, and referred to our proprietary database program, House of Worship Communitywide Asset and Logistics Management (HOWCALMTM). The Rev. Dr. Martha Jacobs, President of the NYDIS Board of Directors, accepted the honor on behalf of NYDIS.
Representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), the American Red Cross in Greater New York (ARC/GNY), Citibank, and Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT), as well as nonprofits specializing in housing and homeless services that NYDIS regularly works with, attended the reception.
