9/11 Families Call For Meeting with Mayor Bloomberg and Port Authority to Find Common Ground on 9/11 Ceremony
On August 1, 2007, in an official statement to September 11th family groups, the Port Authority verified its intent to suspend construction all day on September 11, 2007. We greatly appreciate this direct response given to the families. The message also states that the Port Authority is working closely with the City. We have seen the news reports indicating that the City is reconsidering some of its original September 11 commemorative ceremony decisions regarding access to the World Trade Center site.
We are anxious to meet with the City, State and Port Authority so that we can clarify these decisions and work together to find a mutually agreeable plan to honor our loved ones in a meaningful and respectful way. In this way we can honor all of the victims from America and nationals from other countries around the world who lost their lives so brutally at the WTC on September 11, 2001. It is our earnest hope to accomplish this as soon as possible.
We would like to clarify what we are requesting regarding the 9/11 Anniversary Ceremony:
In addition to obtaining Liberty Street access to the site, we feel that as in past years, the construction ramp to bedrock can be safely utilized as a means of allowing very limited access to the site. We have never requested access to the entire Ground Zero Pit. We are requesting access to a limited area ( a few hundred square feet ) at the base of the ramp at bedrock where family members will be able to proceed in a continuous procession to leave flowers for loved ones at bedrock, and then return back up the ramp to the Liberty Street area of the World Trade Center site.
We have never considered boycotting the ceremony at any time. We have never provided a plan that would put attendees in danger. We are anticipating a timely and compassionate response to our request.
