Nothing tells the story of Ground Zero better then the two articles By Amy Westfeldt that appeared today.

Who Donated Millions to WTC Memorial?

NYC searching sewer line for 9/11 remains ends dig at WTC road

http://www.where-to-turn.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=37613

On the same day that the city basically called an end to the search for remains at Ground Zero they also announced that they were close to reaching their $350 Million target for the WTC Memorial.

Instead of concentrating on a comprehensive recovery plan when the 209 remains were found in a manhole in October the Mayor thought that it was more important for him to lead the fundraising effort for the memorial.

While a comprehensive plan with proper protocols was never created for the recovery of the remains a detailed fundraising plan was put in place which included a $15 Million donation from the mayor himself.

One thing that these two things have in common is the fact that the mayor did not think that it was necessary to include the 9/11 families in either effort.

So now we will have a memorial with the names displayed not as the families wanted but as the mayor decided. I guess $15 million buys him that right.

So we will have a memorial for which we had to fight to get the names above ground.

And we had a recovery effort for which we had to fight for every day.

A recovery effort that even though it is being called completed has once again ended with many unanswered questions and unsearched areas.

Rooftops not searched, sewers not searched and areas now being ignored because construction now makes recovery impossible.

The Haul Road that the city originally did not want to search has yielded over 400 human remains.

A Haul Road that was supposed to be made from Fresh Fill but instead contained two 18 foot steel beams.

A Haul Road on which a friend of mine was recovering human remains one night five years ago only to find it paved over the next day when re returned to the site.

A Recovery Effort that has yet to yield one DNA match even though over 1,400 remains were recovered.

A Recovery Effort that did not allow inspection and did not uncover one personal item.

Maybe if as much effort was placed on the recovery effort as was on the fundraising we might have finally had some real closure.

The sad part of it is nobody is surprised.

Put It Above Ground

I've been telling people I know for a while that this
needs to be called the 'MAYOR'S MEMORIAL',that my
second cousins name will not be listed with the PORT AUTHORITY
and that most likely his remains reside in a Staten island landfill
or maybe Fiterman Hall or scattered somewhere else....these
along wth the Health Concerns,No Compensation or as the
Mayor put it "'the City is not in the BUSINESS of giving out a
FREE LUNCH",what more has to be said !!!!!......BillyCigars
