|I was at a Public Hearing the other night concerning the building of a courthouse on Staten Island.
During the excavation they found human remains of Irish immigrants.
The remains were removed and even though the city has been offered free cemetery space for them they feel that the remains should be put back where they were found.
They want to build a small garden area with a memorial next to the new courthouse.
They want to put the remains back in the middle of an area that is going to become a major pedestrian area.
A space surrounded by a courthouse, a library a theater and a parking garage.
The representative of the Mayor’s office said that he did not like how the proposals were being presented.
He stated in the pursuit of “full disclosure” the public should know everything about what is going into the proposals.
I found it very funny to hear the phrase “full disclosure coming from the Mayor’s office.
Just this week the daily report started identifying remains from a subterranean structure at Ground Zero.
This caught many of us by surprise because we were not aware that they were searching in new areas.
The Hornings asked about this structure and were told;
“The DEP Subterranean Structure refers to the sewer line under the Haul
Road and associated man holes that Barbara Butcher spoke about at the
meeting on April 27th”.
Now let’s get back to full disclosure.
Why are we still not aware of what areas the new search is covering?
Why weren’t these identified months ago?
Why are we continuing to find new sewer lines and new Con Ed conduits?
Now if there was full disclosure all of these would have been identified on the original search plan and most definitely have been on the new search plan.
Maybe they were but none of us have ever seen a copy of either plan.
The Mayor’s office has promised a monthly update of recent findings. Has anyone gotten April’s? We haven’t.
We still do not know how many of the original remains have been retested with the new DNA process.
Over 1,400 remains have been found over the past year and we still don’t know how many of them were tested
Over 1,400 remains and not one personal item has been reported to be found.
We will not even talk about the missing money and personal items from the NYPD Property Department.
Maybe somebody should send the definition of “Full Disclosure” to the Mayor.
Put It Above Ground
