Madeleine --

I am strongly opposed to and vehemently detest the Mayor's proposal for listing of names at the WTC site. I even hesitate to call it the 'WTC Memorial'--a "Memorial" to what? How can it be a "Memorial" without mentioning the date (September 11, 2001), or even fly an American flag? The Mayor's proposal will erect nothing more than an urban plaza.

I do not want my son's name listed randomly or with "meaningful adjacency"--even if that phrase could be adequately explained to me. I want my son's name listed with his age and I want it listed in alphabetical order with all his Marsh & McLennan colleagues who were murdered that day. I also want to see his company's name on the face of bronze parapet/plaque.

If I, as his father, next-of-kin, and legal administrator of his estate, can have no say in how his name should be listed, I may consider legal injunctive action to prohibit the Foundation from even including his name on this so-called Memorial. That would certainly not help speed up any development progress--even more so, if hundreds of other families do likewise.

Please use whatever persuasive abilities you possess on the powers that be to convince them that the family proposal for name listing will only add integrity, dignity and meaningfullness to the proposed Memorial. It will not even change the "look" of the Mayor's proposal.

If this is supposed to be a Memorial to all those people who died there that day, then poll the victims' families to decide how they want their loved ones' names displayed. If this is just a Memorial to some buildings falling down and some people dying, then just put up a plaque that says "On September 11, 2001--oops, forgot, can't mention the date!" Just say, " On this site some buildings fell down and some people were killed." Let the passers-by try to remember/figure out what happened--they'll have to do that anyway with the current Mayoral proposal.

Thank you.

Kurt Horning
