To All,

In our continuing effort to get students and adults back involved with the Community we will be recruiting volunteers for numerous Where to Turn Programs. All student hours will be tracked through our Student Volunteer Database.

Below please find a brief description of some of our programs. For more details go to www.where-to-turn.org. If you have any questions feel free to contact us at info@where-to-turn.org or 718-966-6531.

Please share this information with your distributions any outreach to local PTAís or other school groups would be greatly appreciated.

Snow Shoveling for Seniors. (500 student volunteers already signed up over 2,000 seniors still do not have a volunteer and snow is on the way)

Students are matched with local Senior Citizens on a one to one basis. Students commit to shovel the senior home each time it snows (sidewalk and path to front door). Senior will be located within walking distance studentís home. Student will receive a minimum of 10 hours of community service credit and a letter of recognition from the Borough President. (13 and older)

Re-Gifting for a Good Cause (over 200 toys and various other items collected, Over 500 toys and 250 DVDís already shipped)

We will be collecting unwanted gifts at various locations. Toys and clothes will be sent to less fortunate children in our area and in other impacted areas. CDís and DVDís will be sent to injured soldiers in military hospitals here and overseas through Operation DVD. Other items will be sold at a major flea market in the Spring with all proceeds going to cover shipping costs. (open to all)

Graffiti Removal (Since the weather is nice we are looking to schedule an outing for Friday looking for volunteers)

In the Spring we will once again organize weekly graffiti removals with the local precincts. Student volunteers will receive 5 hours of community service credit for each outing. We are looking to expand the program to have certain blocks adopted by schools. We are also looking for local businesses to register their stores prior to the Spring. We will also be sending out an RFP for the second annual mural project in early February. Four murals will be commissioned to replace graffiti scarred walls. (10 years and older)

Gift of Life (All January Blood Drives are posted at our site. Will be contacting each SI HS to schedule a drive)

We will be working with the NYC Blood Center and Staten Island University Hospital in an attempt to schedule at least one blood drive in every Staten Island High School this year. We will also encourage students to donate blood or recruit donors by giving them 1 hour of community service credit for each pint they donate or donated in their name. We will also be looking to award prizes to the schools that generate the most donations. (17 and above for donors, all ages for recruiters)

Phones for Life (We have over 500 free emergency phones ready to distribute to SI Seniors)

Students can receive Ĺ hour community service credit for each used cell phone that they donate. (minimum of 10 phones) These phones will be converted into emergency cell phones for Staten Island Seniors through the Phones for Life Program. (open to all ages)

Voter Registration Drive (The link on our site is experiencing moderate traffic. We need support from parents and teachers)

Working with the local High Schools we hope to register 90% of our eligible students to vote. High School Juniors and Seniors who turn 18 in 2007 are eligible to register. A link on our homepage www.where-to-tun.org will allow students to register online. (open to High School Juniors and Seniors)

Adopt a School (Shipped two cases of supplies donated by New Dorp High School last week. We will continue to collect)

We will continue to ship school supplies collected by local Staten Island schools to the 26 schools we have adopted in Mississippi and Louisiana. (open to all students)

Academic All County Award (Letters to all Staten Island High Schools will go out next week requesting 2007 eligible seniors)

We will honor all High School Senior Varsity athletes who have maintained a 90 or above GPA in their Junior and Senior years with the second annual Academic All County Award. (High School Senior Varsity Athletes)

We will also continue to assist other organizations such as the Friends of Abandoned Cemeteries and Project Hospitality to name a few by listing their volunteer opportunities on our site. We will also track any studentsí volunteer hours through the Where to Turn Student Volunteer Database which has been supported in part by a grant from the Richmond County Foundation.

We are also looking for some sponsors for these and other programs. Anyone interested in becoming a sponsor can contact Dennis McKeon at dennis.mckeon@where-to-turn.org or 718-966-6531. We are also a member of the Penny Harvest Program.
