It is not surprising that the mayor announced the decision on the listing of names on the WTC Memorial this week.

As some may not know there is a Community Board meeting on December 19, where the mayor’s reps will attempt to put the final nail in the coffin of our attempt to get JPAC in to assist in the search for human remains.

Over the past five years this administration has used this practice quite often.

Whenever pressure has been placed on them whether it is on expenses or security or procedures they have always tried to shift the public’s attention away from one issue by creating a diversion.

Realizing that they may have not been able to control Community Board 1 they need to once again make the families look like ungrateful cry babies.

They will use this as an example of how no matter how hard they try the families will not be satisfied.

The problem is that the press continues to help them out.

It is not surprising that the New York Post published an OP ED by Steve Cassidy praising Bloomberg’s decision while ignoring Pete Gorman’s comments opposing it.

They are once again purposely trying to divide the families as they are afraid of what we have accomplished when we have stood together.

They have never addressed the safety and security issues that we have raised.

Instead of requiring that the site be built according to NYC Building and Fire Codes they give us the opportunity to sign the beams before they are installed.

Instead of providing us with the procedures and protocols for the current search they create a haphazard grid system that conveniently avoids areas where there is a good chance that remains are located.

Instead of excavating the basement of the Greek Orthodox Church they conveniently gave the congregation a new location and have a major media event to present it.

Just last week it was revealed that the current plan for the transit hub would interfere with the promised open forested area along side the planned memorial.

An issue they do not wish to address so they find something else to divert the public’s attention.

It’s like playing three card monte, if we play we are destined to lose.

We need to continue to state the facts.

The facts are that the City continues to make decisions with little or no input from the families.

These decisions are always presented only after they have been approved and implemented.

A few days ago Ken Feinberg came up with a very good way to resolve the current problem of assisting those who have 9/11 illnesses.

The reason I bring this up is because the City continues to act as Feinberg did when he was first appointed Special Master.

He claimed to be the only game in town. He was very stand offish and arrogant.

Realizing that he had made a mistake he made it a point to reach out to the families and find out what needed to be done.

He had open meetings in various boroughs and cities.

In the end with this input the Victim’s Compensation Fund, although not perfect turned out to be much better then it was when it was first presented.

There is a saying “Learn to Listen” “Listen to Learn” Feinberg learned the mayor has not.

The latest decision on the placement of names is just another symptom of the disease that the WTC project has become.
