|As expected most of the local media is rallying behind the Mayorís appointment as if anyone is surprised. (see NY Times editorial below)
Editorial: The Mayorís New Job
Once again the ďAlmighty DollarĒ is being placed before the interests of the families and the media is falling right in line. Letís see how many of our letters to the editors actually get printed. The Foundation will continue to quote the handful of family members that have rubber stamped everything that has been done so far and continue to state that there are just a few family members not satisfied.
Before you know it the foundation will be selling naming and licensing rights and we will wind up with
The (Your corporation Name Here) Freedom Tower
The (Fill In The Blank) Memorial at Ground Zero
Corporations will be lining up to get their names listed and I guarantee that more interest will be given to the placement of Corporate Sponsor names then has been given the names of the victims.
You may think that this is a joke but it seems to be the next step when the fundraising falters.
They have constantly ignored rules and regulations. Just check out the Urban Development Act that created the LMDC which created the WTC Foundation. At least five items in the Act or in the Mission Statements have been violated or ignored. No problem when the Mayor is now running the show and the Governor is a lifetime committee member.
Well it appears we canít do anything about the appointments. Its makes you feel like you are back in England in 1584 when King Henry VIII appointed himself the Supreme Head of the Church of England because the Pope would not grant him a divorce.
If you donít like whatís going on or donít want to follow rules that have been set up just put yourself in charge.
Do you think that any board member is going to go against the mayor or the governor? Not likely as they just have too much to lose.
The mayor, the LMDC and the WTC Foundation have continued to ignore the concerns of the families, violated or ignored by laws and mission statement points and now with these appointments have taken the last bit of democracy from this process.
The fact that this was all done behind closed doors and just prior to the election makes it even worse.
If the mayor is so concerned about fundraising why couldnít he do it as a private citizen or have someone in his Bloomberg Corporation do it for him. Or better yet why couldnít he help raise funds to remove the remains from Fresh Kills.
Also if he was really concerned with money why hasnít he accepted JPACís offer to properly search for remains at the Deutche Bank building for free.
We would hope that Eliot Spitzer would look into this process as well as it seems that everything is being done to remove any power he may have over the process if he is elected.
We need to keep up the fight. Keep writing letters to our elected officials and media outlets.
We succeeded in getting the names raised above ground when we were told we had no shot.
We can succeed here as well.
Finally if this is all about money why havenít we seen an audit of the LMDC and the WTC Foundation to see how much has been spent (or misspent) over the last five years. Or are they just afraid of what they might find?
