Statement of the Skyscraper Safety Campaign
Regarding the Release of September 11th 911 Calls

In August of 2005, the Skyscraper Safety Campaign (SSC), as well as individual family members, and the New York Times, won a court battle to release records and documents from the day of September 11, 2001. These FDNY tapes, transcripts, and Firefighter interviews were released last year. Additionally, partial 911 NYPD calls will be released this week.

The SSC would like to remind Family Members that since 9/11, consistent efforts have been made by the Port Authority, the former Giuliani Administration and Gov. Pataki to keep critical information regarding the true facts of that day from all the families and the general public. Family members should have had the option of receiving this information from the City of New York immediately upon its discovery not nearly five years later.

The Skyscraper Safety Campaign has fought for the past four years to have the truth released about the brutal and unnecessary deaths of our loved ones in the WTC. In addition to the terrorists unfettered access to our airlines, the negligence of the Port Authority, the City and State of New York must also be exposed. The people named above have endeavored to sanitize and suppress the true events of 9/11 to cover their lack of preparedness and avoid any responsibility and accountability. Therefore, continuing to keep 9/11 tapes and transcripts secret fits their agendas perfectly.

The SSC and other family members have fought valiantly on many fronts for the truth. Our outstanding attorney, Norman Siegel, has been by our side in courts for the past four years. Most people are aware that last August, we won the right for the FDNY families to obtain the FD calls and the oral histories of the firefighters, dispatchers, EMS workers and others who testified about the horror and heroism of that day. The City of New York, egged on by those previously referenced, fought us tooth and nail, and made allegations that "the families did not want this information disclosed, because it was too painful". To the contrary, not one single FDNY family filed a statement against the release of these records. Every one of the families of the 343 firefighters requested, and received, a copy of these documents. In addition, many civilian families did the same.

This week we will be receiving additional 911 NYPD tapes. Although we truly sympathize with the families who are shocked that the system has hidden this information for nearly five years, there should be no confusion, panic, or alarm. It is clearly stated that no one will be identified unless the family wishes to do so. In fact, what is actually being released are basically one-way conversations of 911 operators all statements of callers have been redacted. Thus, we still do not have the right to read the entire transcripts of these calls, and we continue to remain in the dark about what really happened in the WTC on that day. Yet, what is most egregious is that the existence of these tapes and the names of the victims was known for the past 4 1/2 years and this information was not disclosed until 9/11 families went to court.

Unfortunately, the SSC has not seen any of the letters sent to the 24 families whose loved ones were identified as having made a 911 call. But again, it is clearly stated that these people will not be identified unless the next of kin chooses to do so.

At this time, the SSC is making a public appeal to any family who wishes to anonymously disclose the text of their loved one's call. In order to enhance public safety, we are seeking the truth about the valiant efforts of those who tried to remain alive but faced a system that could not help them do so. All information will be held in the strictest confidence.

This is not the time for suppression. The truth is necessary to correct the deadly mistakes made on September 11, 2001 to help safeguard public safety in the future.
